A World of Flowers 2026―Yokoyama Taikan’s Cherry Blossoms, Kawabata Ryūshi’s Peonies and Hayami Gyoshū’s Plum Blossoms―

Since ancient times, the enchanting beauty of blooming flowers has captivated our hearts. With their diverse expressions and seasonal transformations, flowers have long served as symbols of the four seasons and been depicted as the subjects of paintings. This spring, the Yamatane Museum of Art is delighted to present a gorgeous exhibition of paintings that fill our galleries with the breathtaking splendor of flowers in bloom.
The works on display in this exhibition include Yokoyama Taikan’s Spring Morning, which depicts mountain cherries blooming in morning sunshine, and Yamaguchi Hōshun’s Sunny Moments in the Rainy Season, which depicts hydrangeas gleaming in the sun after the rain has stopped. Chrysanthemums with Bird, by Sakai Hōitsu, lets us enjoy brightly colored chrysanthemums. With Hayami Gyoshū’s Red Plum Blossoms and White Plum Blossoms, in which red blossoms on an ancient plum tree contrast with white blossoms on a young tree, we complete the cycle of spring, summer, fall, and winter, with blossoms appropriate for each season. And Tanomura Chokunyū’s A Hundred Flowers shows us a gorgeous world in which we discover faithful portrayals of the flowers of a hundred different plants, almost as if in an illustrated botanical guide. A breath-taking world that spans the seasons opens out before us. In addition, in Roses, Nakagawa Kazumasa has painted flowers in a vase, while Yamamoto Baiitsu’s Shangri-La depicts peach blossoms blooming in an earthly paradise. As these example tell us, this exhibition explores the many approaches artists have taken to painting flowers, shedding light on the captivating allure of floral paintings.
Step into a world where paintings of flowers bring the museum to full bloom, and revel in the splendor of a hundred blossoms in riotous harmony.
