A World of Flowers 2026―Yokoyama Taikan’s Cherry Blossoms, Kawabata Ryūshi’s Peonies and Hayami Gyoshū’s Plum Blossoms―

To commemorate the fifty-fifth anniversary of the Yamatane Museum of Art, we are pleased to present a special exhibition devoted to one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese painting: flowers. From spring cherry blossoms to summer peonies and irises, autumn chrysanthemums to winter camellias, flowers have long captivated artists and viewers alike, inspiring works of extraordinary beauty across every period and school of nihonga.
This exhibition brings together approximately sixty works from the Yamatane Collection that celebrate the splendid world of flowers in all its variety. Highlights include Kawabata Ryūshi's Yatsuhashi, Eight-planked Bridge in Iris Garden: Scene from the Tales of Ise, a large-scale masterwork rendered in vibrant color on gold-leafed silk, and Kobayashi Kokei's quietly luminous Lotus Flowers. Works by Yokoyama Taikan, Hayami Gyoshū, Fukuda Heihachirō, and many other celebrated artists are also on view, each offering a distinctive vision of the floral world.
We hope visitors will delight in the rich diversity of flowers depicted here—and in the remarkable skill and sensitivity with which these artists have rendered them.
